What is health?

Many of us have heard that when you're not sick, you have health. That's not true for me. Dr. Bergman, a chiropractor based in Southern California (https://bergmanchiropractic.com/), has often been known to talk about health being strongly related to the nervous system. I completely agree with that for myself. Having experienced several genetic glitches and a severe series of head traumas early in my life, my nervous system did not start out having a balanced and settled existence. Toxic exposures to fungus and very strong chemicals continued to stress my system. By the time I was exposed to toxic mold, in the heating/cooling system of a home I lived in for many years, my nervous system was already pretty taxed.

I can strongly relate to the concept of disease being "dis-ease." There is strong research to support the belief that most chronic and pervasive disease occurs because of inflammation (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3492709/). The following is a list of inflammation related conditions: arthritis (osteo and rheumatoid), MS, Crohn's disease, cancer and asthma            (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/43625.html).

Traumatic brain injury and acquired brain injury have greatly affected my health. They can result from circumstances (https://www.spinalcord.com/causes-of-traumatic-and-acquired-brain-injuries). There are millions of of individuals living with these conditions all over the globe.

Unlike some people, I happen to believe that there are some practices we can incorporate that will support healing from many conditions which are based in excessive inflammation. Unlike inflammation that occurs after an acute injury, which aids in healing, chronic inflammation limits healing and can lead to progressive deterioration of the body (http://www.johnshopkinshealthreview.com/issues/spring-summer-2016/articles/understanding-inflammation).

My journey toward health has had many twists and turns. Growing up in a community which was impoverished, filled with toxic chemicals and conventional foods further taxed an already overwhelmed neurological system. It's interesting to me how many in society want to limit and categorize using labels. "I am this disease or that dysfunction." I completely agree that cascading emotional, neurological, mental, sexual and physical traumas can disrupt a person's functioning at all levels. I do not believe that any one individual, physician or layman, can know beyond all doubt the future of any one person's health.

This blog is dedicated to all of us who ever faced "dis-ease." Those of us seeking the highest and best in health know, perhaps better than most, that our lives are on a spectrum. Some days are indeed better than others. We each have had to learn what supports us and what can deplete us. This is not a replacement for any type of medical advice. It is not intended to replace supervision and support by your medical practitioner. This blog is about my experiences and the information I have discovered over the years of my life. I am so grateful for what I've learned and the amounts of health I have experienced thus far. Feel free to read and ponder my experiences. What you do with them, if anything, is yours and yours alone.
